Cleaning, Sanitizing and Disinfecting. Staying safe during cold and flu season.

Cleaning, Sanitizing, and Disinfecting. A lot of times these words get tossed around with similar meaning. Today I want to explain the difference, and how to keep your environment safe this year during cold and flu season.

Cleaning is a catch all word that covers all types of picking up and keeping your space tidy. But for our purposes, Cleaning is getting rid of dust and dirt, and wiping down surfaces for a clean appearance. No bacteria or virus organisms will be killed at this level. Any multipurpose cleaner will do. You can even make this yourself using a bit of dawn dish soap, mixed with water and a few drops of essential oil.

Sanitizing is the next level in keeping your environment safer. A lot of restaurants and business will sanitize their surfaces to keep in line with CDC guidelines. The sanitation process does kill a certain number of disease-causing microorganisms on a surface, but not all. What you want, is to keep your area disinfected.

Disinfecting is your goal. This is where you eliminate all disease-causing microorganism on a surface with a quality disinfectant. The two main types of disinfectants are: Hospital grade and general purpose.  Most of you have a third party doing this cleaning for you, but it is also important to have products on hand. You never know when you will need to use them during the day to day hustle and bustle.

As a business owner, be sure you ask the right questions to your cleaning companies: What product are they are using? Is it hospital grade? Is it environmentally friendly and safe for children and pets? Even some high-quality disinfectants put off high VOCs, harmful toxins, and heavy metals.
